Worthing has a history of embracing markets as far back as the 18th Century and these still add colour and vibrancy to the Town Centre today. Markets are used to enhance the current retail and hospitality offer in the Town Centre; and by encouraging a variety of stalls they attract additional footfall to the Town Centre.
Worthing Wednesday Market
The Wednesday market is operated by the Worthing Town Centre Initiative and trades along Montague Street every Wednesday of the year. The Market received planning approval in 2003 and must run to conditions outlined in the consent.
Traders can apply to trade either as a casual or a regular trader with different terms applying. Anyone wishing to be considered for a pitch must have their own heavy-duty gazebo, or market stall, and at least £5million Public Liability Insurance. Traders selling food products must be registered with Environmental Health and hold a 4- or 5-star Food Standards Agency rating
To ensure a varied and interesting market, and that traders do not have unreasonable competition, only 2 stalls selling similar products will be allowed at each market. There is a planning condition restricting the number of hot food stalls trading at each market.
Casual Traders
Casual Traders are traders that book onto the market on an ad-hoc basis and have a daily contract with the market. Space is allocated on a first come first served basis with no guarantees on the availability or location of the pitch.
Regular Traders
Regular Traders are charged at a lower rate but contract to attend each market for a period of 6 months or more. Each period of 6 months one day’s holiday is permitted where no payment is required however 14 days’ notice is required. Regular traders will be given priority on pitch location over casual traders and will usually trade in the same position at each market.
Regular traders are required to pay a two-week deposit when signing onto the market.
Costs / Payments
Casual Trader | Regular Trader | |
3m x 3m Stall | £45.00 | £35.00 |
6m x 3m Stall | £90.00 | £70.00 |
9m x 3m Stall | £135.00 | £105.00 |
All costs quoted are on a standard stall size; any additional non-standard space requirement will be charged on a pro rata basis. Larger stalls are more difficult to accommodate due to the layout of the market.
All rents are invoiced on the day and rents must be paid by BACs within 5 days. Rents not received will require a cash settlement before any space is allocated at future markets. All traders must agree to abide to the terms and conditions →
Speciality Market
These are usually organised by independent market operators and are given permission to use the Town Centre by the Worthing Town Centre Initiative under a street trading agreement with Worthing Borough Council.
Trader bookings will be via the market operator and they will set the costs and terms for the market. All agreed Town Centre markets will be shown on the events calendar with links to the organiser’s website or social media.
Ad Hoc Speciality Markets will be considered but please note that any regular markets would require planning consent so cannot be authorised; Wednesdays cannot be considered due to the General Market. Any proposals should be sent to info@worthingtowncentre.co.uk.
Adur Markets run the Worthing Farmer’s Market on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 10am to 2pm. For more information on this market please CLICK HERE
